The Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights (GCENR) has launched the Legal Atlas on Gender Discrimination in Nationality Laws, a new global resource bringing together law, policy and data in one accessible platform.
Today, 45 countries still have nationality laws that discriminate on the basis of gender. In 24 of these countries, women are denied the right to confer nationality on their children on an equal basis with men.
These laws undermine women’s equal citizenship and can have far-reaching consequences for children and families. Gender discrimination in nationality laws is a leading cause of statelessness and can restrict access to education, healthcare, employment, property rights, family unity and freedom of movement. It can also increase dependency within families and contribute to gender-based violence.
The Legal Atlas is currently the only online tool providing detailed information on the status and impact of gender-discriminatory nationality laws in the 24 countries where women cannot pass their nationality to their children equally.
Alongside a visual global overview, the Atlas provides country-specific information on nationality laws, constitutional provisions, international legal obligations and the policies affecting children’s access to residency, education, healthcare, employment, property rights and protection from statelessness.
By making this information easier to access, the Atlas offers an important resource for affected communities, advocates, policymakers and researchers working to advance equal nationality rights and support legal reform.
