Global Movement Against Statelessness

Learn how this community of stateless people, activists, and allies work together to transform responses to statelessness, amplify lived experience, and build a foundation for lasting impact.

The Global Movement Against Statelessness (GMAS) is a community of stateless people, activists, and allies working together to end statelessness, secure equal nationality rights, and uphold the human rights of all stateless individuals.

Launched in 2024, GMAS brings together nearly 400 members worldwide, creating a common space for solidarity, trust-building, and more effective collaboration. At its heart, GMAS challenges historic power imbalances by ensuring that people directly affected by statelessness, nationality deprivation, and discriminatory nationality laws shape its leadership and direction.

GMAS is built on principles of equitable governance, transparency, accountability, and lived-experience leadership. Its co-leadership model reflects the diversity of stateless communities across regions and ensures gender balance, while its structure is designed to combine community engagement, advocacy, partnerships, and resource development. With a growth rate of nearly 400 members since its inception in 2020, GMAS has quickly grown into a global platform for connection, solidarity, and coordinated action.

GMAS and the Global Statelessness Fund are sister initiatives with a shared and transformative purpose: to build a more cohesive, effective, resilient, and strategic statelessness field that is led by, and accountable to, stateless people themselves. While GMAS focuses on collective voice, solidarity, and advocacy, the GSF provides vital resourcing and accompaniment support to its grantee partners. Importantly, one of our GMAS Interim Core Group members plays an active role in supporting the Fund’s Accompaniment Program, which provides organisational development support to grantee partners of the Fund, further deepening the connection between our two initiatives. Together, GMAS and GSF are shifting how the field responds to statelessness, amplifying lived experience, and building a foundation for lasting impact.

GMAS is open to all stateless people and allies who share our vision of a world where everyone has the right to a nationality. Joining GMAS means becoming part of a growing global network and movement working to challenge exclusion and inspire change through advocacy, community action, and collaboration.
