Statefree

Our vision is that one day every stateless person feels like they belong.

Statefree – founded in 2021 – is the first human rights organization based in Germany dedicated to the issue of statelessness in its entirety. Their mission is to empower stateless people through community, visibility, and equal rights. The active bridge-building between stateless people, civil society, academia, and political decision-makers is a priority here.

Statefree has created online and offline communities that allow stateless people to connect and share experiences. Join the first global platform for stateless people and allies here:  https://community.statefree.world/

Through creative visual campaigns, Statefree puts stateless people at the center of stories about statelessness. On September 28th, 2024, marking the 70th anniversary of the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, Statefree launched an international community campaign, titled “70 Years, 70 Voices.” This campaign aims to amplify the voices of 70+ individuals who are stateless or have lived experience of statelessness, in order to educate the public about the issue and its effects. You can find the first pieces of this campaign featured on their Instagram channel or on their website.

In 2023, Statefree launched the Statefree Pod – making our voices heard. Hosted by Christiana Bukalo and Aleksandra Semeriak, this podcast delved into the topics of belonging, nationality, and inequality.

Since one of Statefree’s main goals is to ensure equal access to rights and recognition for stateless individuals, a lot of effort is put into political advocacy. 2023 was dedicated to the goal of reforming German citizenship law and ensuring stateless people have access to naturalization. Statefree submitted an official comment in June 2023 regarding the government’s draft bill – unfortunately, the reform did not have the desired benefits for stateless people. In October 2024, however, a historic milestone was set with the first event in the German Bundestag on the topic of statelessness, which brought together politicians, stateless people, and other stakeholders. Statefree’s main project for the next few years is the development and establishment of a Statelessness Determination Procedure (SDP) in Germany – a decisive step towards recognizing stateless people.
