The Global Statelessness Fund launch event was held online on January 16th, 2025 with the contributions of our grantee partners, Steering Group members, donors and partners, and staff members. Members of civil society organizations, professionals in the philanthropic sector, academics, and those interested in statelessness participated in this event to celebrate our launch and get to know the Fund. The recording of the event can be found here.
During the event, Abdikadir Mohamed from the Somali Association of Africa shared their work with refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless individuals in South Africa and their experience as a grantee partner of the Global Statelessness Fund.
The Somali Association of South Africa (SASA) was founded in 1996 as the first refugee-led community organization in South Africa. Their mission is to ensure that people who are refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, or stateless are self-reliant and fully integrated into South African society.
Today, SASA provides Advocacy and Development projects (Adult Education, Youth, and Women Projects) to around 122,300 beneficiaries across the country. SASA runs two offices (Cape Town and Pretoria) and has representatives in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Durban, North West and Northern Cape.
