On September 24th, Apatride Network organized a session on statelessness in the European Parliament. The Apatride Network team described this session as ‘historic’ as it had been the first time a stateless-led organization held an event in EP. This session was an opportunity to dispel common misconceptions around statelessness and underline that denial of nationality is a grave yet overlooked human rights issue. Apatride Network further highlighted that the leadership and experiences of impacted people are central to sustainable solutions to statelessness.
Apatride Network shared, “We used [this event] as an opportunity to dispel common misconceptions on statelessness and highlight that the human rights issue is still very much an internal affair in the EU. Just like anywhere else, statelessness in the EU is predominantly in situ. Our presentations emphasised how data and legal terminology are mishandled to the disadvantage of stateless people everywhere, including within the EU. It is this mishandling that entrenches the invisibility of statelessness and stateless people. The voices and experiences of stateless people are essential to correcting such shortcomings of the state actors and international organisations that are supposed to address the issue.”
