“The formation of this network was the outcome of years of activism led by those impacted, seeking the recognition of their legal identity and equal status as citizens of Nepal.”
Citizenship Affected People’s Network- Nepal (CAPN) was founded in 2015 to build connections between those affected by discriminatory nationality laws and build momentum to bring about change. As an impacted-person-led initiative, CAPN is built on years of experience and activism and aims to enhance the leadership role of impacted individuals.
CAPN’s mission is to achieve gender-equal nationality rights in Nepal. For this aim, they advocate for legal reform and provide support to impacted persons, support impacted-persons in leading initiatives, and run social awareness campaigns. They are also engaged in international campaigns to change the narrative and influence the discourses around statelessness.
Through their legal advocacy program, CAPN engages with government stakeholders to conduct discussions and inspire meaningful conversations around equal nationality laws. Their case mapping and legal research endeavors are very valuable for addressing the existing gaps and challenges in the nationality laws of Nepal.
CAPN’s Executive Director, Deepti Gurung, is actively involved in casework supporting individuals impacted by gender-unequal nationality laws. To this day, she has supported over 100 cases. CAPN aims to expand their casework program through paralegal training programs and by collaborating with other organizations. More information about their individual case support can be found here.
In order to effectively convey narratives around the impact of gender unequal nationality laws, CAPN has produced a podcast series. The State of Statelessness (SOS) is an audio-video podcast series dedicated to the stories of persons affected by the citizenship laws in Nepal. Click here to listen.
